SEVSONS bring fiery energy to defining new single ‘EVOLUTION’

SEVSONS are a band who have been paving their own way to notoriety within Sydney’s alt-rock circles. With blistering live shows alongside some of the country’s best including Closure in Moscow, Circles and Caligula’s Horse, the four piece have elevated from buzz act to a formidable band with a lengthy career already in motion. With a new single out, we got the guys to interview one another.
What are you most excited about for this upcoming tour?
Rhys: Definitely getting the opportunity to share the stage with Dead Letter Circus. We’re just absolutely stoked that we’ll be up there with a band that we really look up to. We see this as a great opportunity to learn as much as possible about what it takes to make it as a band in the industry.
‘Evolution’ is a bit of a different sound to your previous material, what brought that about?
Rhys: I think we’ve just begun to really refine our sound in all honesty, starting to get a grasp on what it takes to write a good song and putting the pieces together. Chris has put a lot of work into demoing songs in full so that we’re really able to sit down and pick them apart until we can settle on something we’re truly happy with.
Is ‘Evolution’ an indication of the new sound the band is going for?
Rhys: Yes and no. There’s a lot of variety on this upcoming EP and although the other songs are definitely as polished, they’ve each got their own unique vibe. ‘Evolution’ is really this punchy, anthemic alt-rock beast of a track that’s awash with delayed guitars and some fat bass lines, with semi pop-rock vocal melodies thrown over the top. But ‘Evolution’ is it’s own unique beast, however, we’re not seeking to replicate it over and over in the future.
The shows with Dead Letter Circus were announced really late, how much of an indication did you have that you’d be playing the shows? Was it hard preparing for them?
We knew about a week in advance that we were playing the Melbourne show and about two weeks in advance that we’d be playing Sydney, so everything was absolutely all systems go as soon as we were told. There was a lot of organisation that had to go into getting prepared, and we had to source a fill in drummer for the show in Melbourne. We practically were rehearsing every spare night we had for Melbourne and still are now for Sydney. It’s been a big push to get prepared but we’re happy with how it’s coming along! When an opportunity like this comes along, you have to grab it with two hands.
Is there anything you’d like to say to people who might be listening to ‘Evolution’ for the first time, or coming and seeing you for the first time?
Well, I guess we’d like to say we’re really proud of this song, and we hope that others who are listening to the track get the same vibe and feeling as we do from it. As for those who might be coming to see us play for the first time; we’re stoked to be able to bring these songs to the stage and perform, it’s always a humbling experience to be given such great opportunities.
