Exciting night at the theatre: Jesus Christ Superstar

A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
And now it’s heading to Ballarat, presented by the Ballarat Lyric Theatre who are staging Andrew Lloyd Webber’s exciting, award-winning musical at the Wendouree Centre for Performing Arts from March 1 through to March 11.
Director Steve Armati has crafted an engaging new-look production that will have you tapping your toes to the music alongside Kat Armati’s choreography that is stunningly beautiful and Susan Jackson’s choral work under the deft baton of Geoff Martin’s is outstanding.
With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and lyrics by Tim Rice, this show is technically classified as a rock opera, in that rock music is used to tell a theatrical story. So, it’s not what you’d expect from Broadway show. It’s also not really what you’d expect based on the Gospels either, with the story told primarily by Judas Iscariot, the disciple who ultimately betrays Jesus.
Jesus Christ Superstar illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit with a passion that goes straight to the heart and this musical is one that should be enjoyed by all, completed with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive theatricality.
