53rd Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition arrives at National Wool Museum

The National Wool Museum in Geelong will host the 53rd Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, opening on 1 December 2017.

The world-renowned exhibition, on loan from the natural History Museum in London, boasts 100 extraordinary images that celebrate the intimate and astonishing diversity of the natural world.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the most prestigious photography event of it’s kind, having provided a global platform that has showcased the natural world’s most challenging sights for over 50 years.

“This is the fourth year the National Wool Museum has been the exclusive Victorian venue for Wildlife Photographer of the Year and this year is a particularly moving exhibition”, said Padraic Fisher, Director of the National Wool Museum.

Launching in 1965 and attracting 361 entries, today the competition receives almost 50,000 entries from 92 countries, underlining it’s revered standing in the industry.

Winning images are selected for their creativity, originality and technical excellence, with this year’s 100 award-winning images embarking on an international tour that allows them to be seen by millions of people.

“It’s a great honour for Geelong to once again host this prestigious photography exhibition. If you haven’t previously seen this exhibition, make sure you visit the National Wool Museum this summer and enjoy these captivating photographs,” Mayor Bruce Harwood, City of Greater Geelong says.

Among the finalists were five Australian photographers, two of which were category winners.

Justin Gilligan’s stunning image of a Maori octopus feeding on giant spider crabs in Tasmania, won the ‘Behaviour: Invertebrates’ category and Gerry Pearce’s image of an Australian Brush Turkey, ”The Incubator Bird”, taken near his home in Sydney was the winner of the ‘Behaviour: Birds’ category.

The 53 rd Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition kicks-off from December 1 at the National Wool Museum.
