Ballarat Blog #673

The handsome Kim Churchill is coming to Karova Lounge on September 30 on his Weight Falls Tour. The listener is reminded of James Blunt with his whispy voice and sweet ballads that are sure to bring a few fans along to see him in the flesh. He has been knocking them over, so to speak, with a few shows up North being sell-outs. It might pay to get in early.

There are a couple of gigs coming up which are a must-see, with the super impressive Saskwatch doing their thing on October 12. I saw them play around a year ago and I was mighty impressed.

Also for the more hardcore fans, The Supersuckers are coming to Australia and are pencilled to blast their way into the Rat on November 5. It’s a Sunday gig so tell the boss that you won’t be in on Monday!

Suttons House Of Music only has around a month and a half to go before it sadly ceases being a live gig venue. Such a shame for the people of Ballarat, however… one door closes… let’s hope there is a venue to hold some of the great acts that go out of their way to come to Ballarat. Blues/Roots artist Geoff Achison will play Suttons on September 22 and it’s only $20 to get in. Known for his energetic live performances, Geoff started out with legendary Australian blues stylist Dutch Tilders, before going it alone. Geoff has toured the UK, Europe and U.S A and had his own independent record label back in the ’90s. Having been compared to the great Eric Clapton, Geoff’s songwriting is original and thoughtful. Get down to this gig. It will be a classic.

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for the incredibly gifted Davey Lane who has just released a kick arse follow-up album to his brilliant 2014 release, Atonally Young. Lane is normally ripping out lead breaks in the iconic rock band You Am I but is certainly making a name for himself with his unique style of rock/pop music. His new album, I’m Gonna Burn Out Bright, slowly draws you in with its clever melodies and guitar hooks. The riff on Biggest Star might just be riff of the year and would not be out of place on a T-Rex record! Lane is coming our way mid October. Go Tigers!
