Ballarat Laneways After Dark 2017

Ballarat Laneways is back, this year a little later with a stellar ‘After Dark’ lineup, presented by the City of Ballarat to complement the Ballarat International Foto Biennale.

Held on Saturday 9 September, Ballarat Laneways After Dark will bring the best independent local and regional live music to take the chill out of a long, cold Ballarat winter.

Set against the backdrop of the spectacular Ballarat Art Gallery & Laneways Lumieres light and sound installations, Ballarat Laneways is a sensory experience exploring the further horizons and diverse landscapes of contemporary music.

Previously hosting acts as such as Gareth Liddiard (The Drones), Gold Class and Freya Josephine Hollick, the 2017 Ballarat Laneways After Dark headliners are the esteemed band, The Teskey Brothers. Having recently sold out a string of shows around the country including three Corner Hotel shows, the Melbourne quartet honour that old school Motown sound and work it into something of their very own. Their debut album Half Mile Harvest embodies soul and blues flavours throughout and talks to notions of heartbreak and common themes of working through broken relationships. They are one not to miss.

Adding to the scene will be Jazz Party, featuring ex-members of Clairy Browne & The Bangin Rackettes. Get ready for late nights, flickering neon, blue smoke and beer fuelled dance freak-outs over a gravely wailing saxophone – think New Orleans processionals meets Twin Peaks.

Wild, unconventional and ruthlessly blunt, Hollie Joyce is a songwriter completely in control of her craft. Combining fervent lyrics with distorted and at times eerie tones, Joyce has established a compelling sound that doesn’t hold back. Alongside driving bass-lines, textured guitars and thrashing drums, Joyce is ominous one moment, graceful the next, creating an exciting paradox impossible to turn away from.

And introducing Neighbourhood Relations the brand new five-piece band from Ballarat. Hailing from bands such as Bel Air, Teal AV, Electric Mud and Way Dynamic, this new act certainly has a lot of talent within. Their music can best be described as “surf spaghetti western” – and with an energetic live show, you know that this is one band that you will not want to miss!

Presented by the City of Ballarat, Ballarat Laneways After Dark has also partnered with the City of Ballarat Youth Services FReeZA program to present a special Ballarat Laneways All Ages alcohol / drug / smoke free concert from 5pm featuring Drew McCarthy, Peggy Hills and Anna Oliphant-Wright.

When & Where: Ballarat Laneways After Dark, Art Gallery McCain Annexe & Alfred Deakin Place – September 9, 7.00pm to 11.00pm
