Ballarat Blog #670

Pink Moon are playing at the glorious Suttons House Of Music on August 11 and it’s free to get in. Americana folk and alt country is what you will be in for if you make the effort after a long week. Tip down a few cold ales or red wines and enjoy listening to Tara and Adam strumming acoustic guitar, uke and a bangin’ some skins.

Ballarat singer-songwriter Patrick McCabe will do the Sunday Sesh on August 13, bringing his haunting vocals and brilliant guitar work, if that’s your thing. Pencil Joe Camelleri and the Black Sorrows in to your diary for August 26. Having been around the traps for roughly 40 years, Camilleri is a class act and this will be a terrific show with Suttons being such an intimate venue. $40 gets you standing room and $45 will get your bum on a seat for the night.

Up The Guts are a bunch of intrepid musos tackling the journey from Hobart to Darwin, playing a celebration of Australian rock’n’roll. 18 days, 15 shows and 7,500kms – surely that effort alone makes you want to get down to support these guys on Friday August 11.

The Murlocs make their way to the Rat on Saturday August 19. Their third album Old Locomotive has just been released and it has been described as blistering rock’n’roll with vintage hooks, twists and grooves. The harmonica gets a run on a few tracks also. Grimy dependable rock might be one way to describe this band from my ol` hometown Geelong!

Hidden somewhat down the rear of Albert Street in Daylesford is a new Mexican eatery named Casa El Ray. Not your traditional cheesy/full as a boot when you walk out kind of thin though. Clean tasty food with soft shell tacos to absolutely die for and corn cobs that are succulent and juicy. The place is open for lunch and dinner and the owners are really pleasant. It is a little way out of Ballarat, but worth the drive, or to keep in mind if you are heading to Daylesford.

Lovely coffee is being made daily at the new Kiosk on Lydiard Coffee Bar, just over your left shoulder as you withdraw some more dough out of the Commonwealth ATM machine. Francis and Kate will give you a big smile and a delicious hit of caffeine to get your day off to a good start. Drop in and say hello!
