Ballarat Blog #667

We Ballaratians have been getting away with murder so far as winter has been a walk in the park… Shhhhh! A couple of chilly mornings, but nothing a couple of double-shot lattes won’t fix!

With plenty of quality acts still coming to town, what better way to end the month than with Cookin’ On Three Burners who will play Karova Lounge on June 30. The deep funk/soul/jazz trio have recently scorched eight tracks onto analogue tape… and made it available to you via vinyl or digital. Lab Experiments Vol.1: Mixin’ featured the smokey vocals of Stella Angelico, and word has it that she will light up a ‘fourth’ burner on the night, so to speak. Get down to this if you love your Hammond organ a swellin’ and a screamin’!

The following night members of various Melbourne acts The Naysayers,The Ugly Kings and The Etiquettes get together to pay tribute to Fleetwood Mac album Tango In The Night. Their fifth and last studio album was released in 1987 and featured such hits as Little Lies, Big Love and Everywhere. It’s only $15 to get in, sing along and remember how old you really are!

If you still have any lead left in your pencil after these two gigs, you can mooch on down to Suttons House Of Music on Sunday July 2 and see Jam Packed.

How exciting that Georgia Fields and Phia are making a pit-stop in Ballarat on July 6 as they head off on their Sky and Sea National Tour. Be prepared for a very special evening of musical dexterity as they share the stage and each others songs – accompanying one another on everything from kalimba to casio, electric guitar to tambourine. Expect beautiful harmonies, world-class song-craft and apparently some crowd participation may be on the agenda. Take your best Delta voice ladies!

As a part of the Ballarat Winter Festival, four contemporary/improvisational jazz acts will perform between 7 – 10pm at Ballarat Mechanics Institute, at 117 Sturt Street. The good news is, it’s free entry and the bar is open from 6pm if you want to have a few sherbets beforehand. One thing I will give a mention to is the Bridge Mall Farmers Market on the first Saturday of every month. July 1 will be the next one with live music, fresh organic produce and plenty of activities for the kids to do!

Adios amigos.
