Wrapped Up Festival: Something new and a little different

Presented by The Eastern and Athletic Club Brewery, Wrapped Up Festival will be bringing the likes of the Cannanes, The Ocean Party, Angie (SYD), Constant Mongrel, School Damage amongst a slew of other acts to Ballarat for an afternoon revelry. Forté chat to organiser James Donovan about the new event.

Hi James, thanks for chatting with Forte. How are you and what are you up to at the moment?
Hey! No worries. I’m still a bit scattered from Golden Plains the other weekend, but feelin’ great nonetheless.

Tell us a bit about Wrapped Up Festival – what’s the idea behind it and how did it come about?
Wrapped Up is a day-long festival at The Eastern, located in the sleepy regional town of Ballarat. The idea for the festival formed pretty naturally. I’ve always loved live music and have been going to music festivals since I was 15-16. It was when I began booking for The Eastern around mid-2016 that I had the concept for Wrapped Up. I mulled over it for a while with the pro’s and con’s and eventually thought ‘you know what? I’m just gonna go for it’. I haven’t had much time to look back since!

Has it been a long process getting this festival organised?

It’s been a surprisingly quick process in organising everything for Wrapped Up. It hasn’t been without a bit of stress and frustration, but it has really seemed to come together over a very brief time.

The line-up is quite impressive, including bigger names like The Cannanes and The Ocean Party. How did you go about putting together the line-up? Was it easy to get the bands all on board?

We’re very lucky to have so many fantastic bands/performers involved for the festival. It was as simple enough as to approach each one asking if they might be keen to play and they all said yes. It’s reassuring when you have a bunch of bands together on a bill that are all just wanting to play a fun gig.

As a day event, starting at 2pm, what should attendees expect from the day?
We’d really love for attendees to come to Wrapped Up with a clear mind. No expectations. Ready for something new and a little different. It’s all relative. We’re also projecting episodes of Round The Twist out the back in the beer garden. That is something to expect actually.

What are you most looking forward to on the day in general?
I think, for myself, what I’m most looking forward to is seeing everyone gathered together enjoying a grouse day of music, food, and good vibes. I think that’s all I could ask for.

Why is having events like this and bringing live music so important to places like Ballarat, what benefits do you find from events like these?
There’s always been a strong, steady interest for live music within Ballarat. In recent years, a number of really great events have popped up around the town showcasing what’s exciting with bands/performers – both locally or abroad. Wrapped Up is in continuing that support of Ballarat live music, and also offering something new and a bit out there for punters. It’s more of an experience, than just observation.
