The best places for Mexican around the region

Hola amigos! Here at Forté, we’re big fans of anything Mexican – sombreros, cactus, moustaches, maracas, tacos and tequila. With the weather cooling down, we thought we’d turn up the heat and round up the best places to taste the fresh, colourful, spicy Mexican flavours we all love. Olé!

Mexican Republic

Mexican Republic brings the flavours of Mexico to the people – including a fresh and tasty menu to share or dine alone. Mexican beers, street corn, chorizo quesadilla and Spanish wines is what you will find on the menu. We’ve got our eye on the pulled pork, charred pineapple, coriander,
chilli, red cabbage and chipotle mayo tacos, or a classic burrito will do. Still hungry after dinner? These guys also have a nutella and banana quesadilla on the menu. Say no more. However, if your dessert is in the cocktail style, good news is the Geelong venue is licensed until 1am on Friday and Saturday nights!

Zambreros

Zambreros is fast Mexican with a mission. Offering modern Mexican flavours, this chain features all the favourites such as tacos, burritos, bowls and nachos with slow-cooked meats and even home-made guacamole, as well as offering customised options for those preferring gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and vegan options. Along with great food, they’re working towards a great cause, committed to tackling world hunger through its its Plate 4 Plate initiative. If you’re after a quick fix, we’d look no further.

Taco Bill

We all know and love this Mexican joint. With nachos, burritos, enchiladas and tacos all on the menu, you are guaranteed to get all the classics here. The drinks menu is on par with the food, with their famous frozen margaritas available in 22 different flavours. The mango margaritas is our pick – and you even have the option of up-sizing to a fishbowl, complete with a free sombrero. And the best part? They are also open every day to serve those random Mexican cravings.

Mojo Mama

It’s vibrant, fresh and it’s tasty. Mojo Mama is another Geelong Mexican joint worth stopping by. Boasting healthy ingredients, this place has taken dietary requirements on board, producing an almost entire gluten-free menu. This includes soft tacos, quesadillas and mains with beef, pork, chicken, as well as some seafood and vegetarian offerings. With great food, comes great beer. There is a large selection of Mexican imported beers such as Day of the Dead, Dos Equis and Negra Modelo. There’s also decent selection of desserts so head here on your next date night and try the
‘Mojo Loco’ peanut butter caramel milkshake.

Olé

Opening late last year, Olé, is one of the newest restaurants in Torquay offering fresh modern Mexican flavours. Perfectly blending the beach lifestyle of Torquay with the fragrant flavours of Mexico, the décor itself is enough to get us dining there. With a Mexican mosaic tiled chimney, along with velvet sombreros on the walls, it’s every bit of a fiesta you would want. Olé is open for lunch and dinner throughout the week. Highlights on the menu are the ceviche (lightly cured fish) varieties, the duck breast tostadas and the charred corn – but there’s a lot more on offer. We hear they also do takeaway tacos…

Just remember, with authentic Mexican food, there’s also authentic drinks to match. So do like the Mexicans do: order a few rounds of tacos and match with a margarita.
