Ballarat Blog #656

The sun has been shining and the people of Ballarat are enjoying the wonderful summer the weather Gods have given us thus far. One can’t help but feel that there is a hiatus and people swarm to the coast during the school holiday period. Getting around the town at those ‘school times’ seems to be so much easier.

There’s plenty still happening around the town though, and Suttons House Of Music have Natalie Gauci playing on January 27 from 8.30pm. Tickets are $22 at the door. She is incredibly gifted, and not to be missed if sweet vocals and beautiful melody are your thing.

Karova have indie rock legend Paul Dempsey playing on the 27th of January also. Being the frontman of one of Australia’s most definitive rock bands Something For Kate, Dempsey has just released his second solo album Strange Loop. The album is quite vocally lush and there are some really interesting tracks on this record. I quite enjoyed Lifetime Supply with its Elliot Smith-like melancholics. There are several songs that would not be out of place in Something For Kate, but Dempsey is a mighty fine lyricist and finding interest in his music is never difficult. This is a really good record from Dempsey. $35 and you are in for a treat of great indie pop rock!

Heads Of Charm are playing on Friday February 3rd at Karova on their Ok Yes Please Tour. Trash rock is how they describe themselves, but tight riffs and a rock solid rhythm section drive a quality act, and we are lucky to have these lads dropping by as they do a wee tour around Oz. Get along if you can to see this high energy outfit.

On the food scene, I found the biggest burger EVER on a night out a few weeks ago when I ventured into the Bunch Of Grapes Hotel on Pleasant Street. I did ask the waitress how on earth they were able to make a burger so big and I was informed it is all hand-made on the premises. I backed up the night after, but decided to go with the chicken kiev which was equally impressive. They do douse it in gravy, so on the side is my recommendation.

For a refreshing ale after work, get down to The Freight Bar on the corner of Mair and Peel Street. Awesome beers on tap, top tucker and a nice relaxed feel.
