Mosquito Coast

Since Mosquito Coast first popped up on the radar after their 2015 win of triple j Unearthed High, there’s been no stopping the Perth band. After becoming a four-piece, they have since been smashing the summer festival circuit and playing shows all over the country, all whilst the two founding members are still at the ripe age of 18.

According to Conor Barton, the journey was massively kick-started by their Unearthed High win.

“Everything up until now is still rooted in the fact that we won triple j Unearthed High. It gave us so many opportunities. It’s been about a year and a half, and we are still feeling the repercussions and support from it.”

In the follow up to their hit singles ‘Commotion,’ and ‘Call My Name’, Mosquito Coast delivered a six track EP titled ‘Television Love’ at the end of last year, and the few lucky crowds who have seen this material live so far have been vibing high.

“We have only really road tested the new material on the little three date summer tour we did, but they are definitely our best shows we have played to date. We are a lot more confident live now, and especially with newer, more exciting content. It’s been fun.”

The band flew up to Sydney to record the EP in just over a week.

“It was done about July last year. We went over to Sydney to do it with our friend Carl from Porsches and Jack from The Preatures mixing it. We had about eight days in the studio to do the six songs. So it was really nice to be able to take the time and not rush things, and it meant that if we needed to, we could experiment with a lot of different sounds without having to worry about time. So I think that’s why we were such perfectionists with it, not that it’s perfect, but we definitely honed in on sounds to make sure it was exactly what we wanted.

“We wanted an overarching feel over the whole album – for it to be cohesive. So that was a bit of a challenge that we hadn’t worked with before. It’s definitely my favourite thing that we have done so far, I am really happy with how it’s turned out.”

After playing Lost Paradise, New Years on The Hill and Southbound within four days, Mosquito Coast are taking a well-deserved break before hitting the road again in February for the Television Love EP Tour.

“We are really excited. We have been so lucky to get Mezko on it because we are really, really big fans of what they do, so we are really excited to go around for some rural shows at places we haven’t been before. I’m really excited to check out places like Wollongong and Ballarat, they are pretty different places to where we normally play, so I am really excited!”
