Hey Mammoth

Female trio Hey Mammoth are the acoustic, folk band boasting edgy harmonies and inspired lyrics. Forté chat with Rosey, Matilda and Cam ahead of the new year!

Hi girls, thanks for chatting to us today, what have you been up to?
Two of us, Cam and Rosey, have just finished the school year and have gone into year 12, and Matilda has just completed her first year of uni! We’re preparing for a lot of local gigs over the summer holidays and are organising many exciting things for 2017!

You’ve just performed at Queenscliff Music Festival, what’s the ultimate performance goal for you guys, something like Beyond The Valley or another big festival?
We love a bit of everything, even the super early morning Rotary Club breakfast gigs! At the moment we’re really looking into bigger festivals around Australia, especially Woodford Folk Festival!

Next year you’re set to perform at Music To A Tee, can you tell us a little about that, and how did you get involved?
We were asked to play at Music To A Tee (on the 20th of January) which is a fundraiser for Karingal and involves 40 golfers playing 100 holes of golf. It’s in Barwon Heads and includes a raffle, auction and a line-up of other awesome performers over the afternoon and into the evening! We love everything Karingal does, and are super excited to get involved!

What can we expect to see from Hey Mammoth throughout 2017?
We’ve just recorded a few of our originals up in Melbourne, so hopefully we’ll get them out on an EP sometime soon! Otherwise, we’ll be playing a heap of local gigs… and Hey Mammoth stickers are definitely on the radar.

How do you three all get along in such close confines, do you get annoyed spending so much time with each other?
It can get a little intense, especially during rehearsals. But we’ve been friends for so long (a couple of years before we became a band) so we usually laugh anything off a few minutes later! I’d say we’re almost too comfortable around each other!

Do you each have a highlight of being in the band so far?
Cam: When I was tapped on shoulder in a mosh at the main stage of a music festival, and asked by a stranger if I was in Hey Mammoth! It was crazy that someone was so excited to meet me just because she knew the band.

Rosey: It’s amazing being able to play at wineries all across the Bellarine and Surfcoast as they are such lovely and easy going venues. A personal favourite would be playing at Kiltynane Wines in Swan Bay on Easter Sunday this year. It was lovely being able to spend the day providing music for so many people sharing time with their families and friends.

Matilda: A highlight for me was following up after Dan the Magic Man at a gig – what a standard to uphold!

What do you all have planned for New Years, will you be playing any gigs?
Probably just a house party! However, we were recently asked by a questionable local to play at a masquerade ball in Melbourne, with a free hummer hired for our way back home! We never actually gave them an answer…
