GPAC’s 2017 Deakin University Theatre Season

Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) has unveiled it’s 2017 Deakin University Season, featuring a range of nine local and international works from a variety of major companies and small and medium independent producers, also featuring some of Australia’s most loved performers.

The season begins with Bangarra Dance Theatre’s production: Terrain, which explores connectivity to the country.

The Australian based shows continue with Coranderrk, a tale about what might have been throughout indigenous Australian history, Minnie & Lirazan, an original comedy about residents of a retirement village betting on their grand children’s hearts, and What Rhymes with Cars and Girls which is an intimate musical that sees two lovers brought together by a mix of the stars and a pizza delivery gone weird.

Set to be a highlight for next year’s season is Malthouse/Melbourne Festival production Hello, Goodbye and Happy Birthday, which celebrates an 18th and an 80th birthday, both pinnacle moments in an adults life. There will also feature some inter-state work, such as The Popular Mechanicals from South Australia – which was originally directed by Geoffrey Rush, a comedic revival of the original show; and the classic Dracula from Queensland’s ‘Shake & Stir Theatre Co’. Coming from the ‘Tasmanian Theatre Company’ will be Bakersfield Mist, which is a new American work inspired by true events and asks the important questions about what really makes art authentic.

Mozart’s classic: The Marriage of Figaro will also be performed by Opera Australia and the Geelong Youth Choir for one performance only, and follows the adventures of a household over one crazy day.

These nine shows will be running from March through to October 2017 in the Drama Theatre and The Playhouse, with both matinee and evening shows available to attend.

Season packages are available for all the theatre lovers wishing to see numerous shows and save money, otherwise individual tickets are available. For details go to gpac.org.au/2017
