Soy candles are in right now – especially ones that are both affordable and environmentally friendly. Forté chat to Janece Smith of Shirly J Collection.
Hey Janece, thanks for chatting to us, how are you and what are you up to at the moment?
I’m great thank you. At the moment I am in full Christmas mode, it’s a crazy time of year but I love it! I’m pouring candles, posting off Christmas orders and planning for my next online sale event which is happening via Facebook on the 8th and 9th of December.

Stylish, affordable and alluring
What do you think sets yourself apart from other candle businesses?
I am very aware that soy candles are a luxury item and not a necessity, but I wanted to create beautifully scented soy candles that are actually affordable to a variety of budgets so everyone can enjoy some Shirly J luxury in their homes. I have created a ‘Signature Collection’ and for those candle lovers that crave something more luxurious, I have created a ‘Luxe Collection’.
Why do you choose to use pure soy over paraffin to make candles? Is there any particular benefits you can tell us about?
Oh my gosh, where do I start! There are so many benefits to using soy wax compared to paraffin and cheaper waxes. Soy wax is a processed form of soy bean oil, it’s biodegradable and vegan friendly! Soy wax candles are non-toxic and burn cleaner (and longer!) than paraffin candles, with no petrol-carbon soot which can blacken your walls, ceilings and furniture. Cheaper waxes such as paraffin and can add toxins into the air you breathe and burn much hotter and faster and candles made from soy wax. Soy candles are simply better for you, your family and the environment.
We notice you have a range of different products, including the service of personalising candles for special events like weddings. What do you think about the rise of candles as keepsakes?
I love that gifting personalised candles is on the rise. I love being able to create custom gifts for my clients to give to their loved ones. Being able to create a unique keepsake for someone is just so special, I feel very lucky to be trusted with the creation of these bespoke gifts. Just recently I have introduced my ‘Custom Wedding Collection’ which includes bridesmaid proposal candles and bonbonnieres. Each time I am designing something new for a bride-to-be, I feel so honoured to be able to assist them on their big day in this small way.
Any future plans or changes coming up into the new year?
Christmas and wedding season are keeping me pretty busy as we head to the end of 2016, but in the new year I am hoping to expand my little business into the wholesale market – so hopefully I can secure a few boutique stockists in 2017.
