What’s on in Ballarat?

Well it damn well snowed up here a couple of weeks ago. Even my little hometown of Meredith had some of the fluffy white stuff falling from the sky. So as you could imagine, the great outdoors are not really being embraced at the moment…. other than the odd group of mad cyclists whizzing by wearing more thermal than lycra.

Ross Wilson showed what a fine gent he is by letting one of his biggest young fans Harry Gradkowski get up and sing ‘Eagle Rock’ with his band when they recently played at Suttons House Of Music. It was a very kind gesture and it made a dream come true for the young lad. You rarely see this kind of thing from artists these days and it made Wilson’s visit a real night to remember. Harry, who hasn’t hit secondary school yet, sang the song word for word and sent the crowd into a frenzy.

Suttons have a Sun On The Moon James Taylor tribute band appearing on July 9 which will no doubt attract a crowd. Pete Donohue is also playing the Sunday sesh on July 10 if blues is what gets you through the end of a week.

July 22 will see The Badloves come to town and I would advise getting in early for this show, as I think a sellout is on the cards!

The High Learys are on a national tour and are due to arrive in Ballarat on the 8th of July. Playing psych/pop/rock these guys have some awesome sounds that remind me of the Bo Weevils. The support acts on the night are Wesley Fuller and Electric Mud. Both acts well worth getting along to see if you have the time to rock up early. Some incredibly gifted musicians play in Fuller’s band and he is a pocket rocket dynamo songwriter with big things ahead.

I must make mention of the “top pub” in Meredith which was damaged by a fire some time ago, but to the joy of all locals has recently re-opened and meals are being served Wednesday to Sunday. The place is as cosy and as inviting as a country pub can get with it’s open fire-place, damn fine counter meals and rustic feel. I will be back for sure to thaw out in front of the fire and smash a parmi down.
