With newer releases of late, the accent, mentions of Vegemite and general “Aussie-ness” are lost. It’s almost as we’ve grown up in the music industry, we’ve stepped further and further away from attributing things to their origins. Split Seconds are a band who have kicked this trend and returned to accepting their Australian qualities.
‘Relocation Blues’ starts off with a story of relocating with heavy excitement and an undeniable Australian accent. Next up ‘Young Adults’ croons as the instruments build around it. It’s a highlight on the release, that builds on the story-telling, excited nature of the previous track.
While it’s probably not something I would fight for a spot in the disc tray to play, it’s a return to the good ol’ days where musicians weren’t afraid to “own” their accent. But it’s about so much more than that; this Brunswick based band have created a well-deserved following who respect their ability to tell a good story with creative lyrics and with a beat that moves things along. Pick it up for a bit of nostalgia.
