What’s on Ballarat?

There are a few pros to being a music writer. One of them is getting along to see new artists at unique venues. To be quite frank, I had never been inside Suttons House Of Music until a fortnight ago when I headed there to see Mia Wray support Tim Rogers on a  Thursday night. This is an impressive venue, to say the least, and an almost full house saw Mia Wray put on a gutsy heartfelt performance to warm the stage for the legendary Tim Rogers – who kindly brought along his fellow gun-slinger Davey Lane.

Rogers was in fine form and most appreciative of the crowd that had ventured out on the night to see him play. The other highlight for me on the night was the Coldstream Pale Ale that was being served on tap. Although $7 a pot, it had me doing cartwheels across the bar…well almost!

Anna Wright will play at Suttons  on May  29 and at the mere age of 15 her country/ indie folk songs are being canvassed on a  Sunday afternoon  in Ballarat with a debut album in the pipeline. Anna played at the Ballarat Beer Festival earlier this year and was one of the most impressive up and coming acts on the day.

Diesel is coming to Ballarat and will be playing at Suttons  on June 16 and 17. The  Friday night  gig is a sell out, but tickets still available for the night of the 16th. Diesel is a class act and what a great venue to see him play songs from his upcoming album Pieces Of Americana.

Shaun Kirk plays at Main Bar  on June  4 continuing on the Season Of Blues.   Give To The Needy is an interesting track worth a listen with its confronting lyrics. Steer The Wheel is the new release from Kirk and he has been knocking them down all over Australia of late. Tickets are available from Open Pantry on  5334 4007.

Over at Karova Lounge there is something for the headbangers with Abreact smashing out hardcore metal  on the 3rd. Tunes will ring out from Nightshift at The Royal Hotel Meredith  on the 10th of June.   The Back Creek Cafe on the opposite corner will get you the best coffee and breakfast in Meredith. Kids from Christian College are sent here on weekly work experience ventures, and four kids fussing over you at the cash register is quite humorous.
