My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2

It’s been 14 years since My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and not much has changed: Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos who again wrote the script) now works in the family restaurant, lives on the same street as her family and dotes on her 17-year-old daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris). Toula’s non-Greek husband Ian (John Corbett) is now the principal at Paris’ school, which only adds to the teen feeling trapped by her family. And if Paris’ pulling away wasn’t stressful enough for Toula, when it comes to light that her parents (Michael Constantine, Lainie Kazan) aren’t officially married the whole extended family starts to stick their noses in.

This is a one-joke film, but that joke – Greek families are intrusive, overbearing and a whole lot of trouble – is decent enough. The comedy is extremely broad and Vardalos gives everyone plenty of material, leaving herself a supporting role in her own movie – which is probably a wise move as while her generally naturalistic performance works next to Corbett, everyone else here is playing it as broad as the side of a house. Stereotypes abound, but they’re all good natured, making this gentle, undemanding fare that’s a lot warmer than the winter setting might suggest.
