Golden Plains Arts Trail: Lucy McEachern

Multi-award winning sculptor Lucy McEachern returns to the Golden Plains Arts Trail for the fifth time, and this year as both an exhibiting artist and for the first time, visitors are invited to her new home studio.

Lucy has invited a number of artists to join her, each  showing  a range of techniques  and styles. They all have a rural connection which creates a nice connection to their surrounds – and a life size bronze swan will also be on show.

We took the time to chat to this accomplished and down-to-earth local talent. School introduced Lucy to art. She loved ceramics and art classes at school, and took the opportunity to study Fine Art at Monash, which kick started an exciting and rewarding career.

Lucy works in “robust, historic” bronze; she sculpts in wax and clay and then sends her pieces to a foundry to be cast in bronze. She has been working with bronze for 16 years.

Lucy says she loves bronze because of its “stability, tactile nature and ability to mature and change over time are wonderful qualities”.

Lucy draws inspiration  from her Golden Plains surroundings – birds, in particular.

“There is something about creating a bird that has wonderful shape, line and form and then seeing  people’s  reactions to the sculpture.”  Her work has taken her to weird and wonderful places, researching new bird subjects in bird  sanctuaries, swamps, rivers, zoos, national parks like Kakadu and the Galapagos Islands. Her travel now revolves around birds which she says is a “wonderful excuse to get amongst it”.

She is Golden Plains born and bred – she grew up on the family farm in Golden Plains and says it’s is a wonderful place to live, with close proximity to the coast, bush and large regional centres.

She loves the Golden Plains Arts Trail. “I think the Golden Plains Arts Trail is a wonderful event as it gives the artist the opportunity to open their doors to the public and share what they do.” She says.

“It would be wonderful to see the Golden Plains Shire be known for its creative arts and produce.” You can find Lucy’s work, and home studio, at 984 Wingeel Road, Wingeel 3321.
