What’s on Ballarat?

Santa has parked the sleigh and reindeers for another year and the locals in the Rat have had a blast with The Ballarat Beer Festival rolling through town in mid January. You Am I and Dallas Crane brought their trademark rock acts to the town. Patrons soaked up the sun (yes, there is such a thing occasionally in Ballarat) and craft beers, while food stalls provided fuel to burn through an afternoon of good times. The event has become a major drawcard for the town over the last few years and hopefully the day continues to grow.

Steve Smyth will bring his spacey Tom Waits-like bluesy tunes to Karova Lounge on Saturday January 23. There is a Bowie Tribute night over at Babushka lounge which sounds like a fun night to put on your face paint and skin-tight leather pants and sing along to Modern Love. Dallas Crane will also return to the Rat early February after wowing fans at the Ballarat Beer festival earlier in the year.

Mustered Courage will be performing at Suttons House Of Music on the 27th of January and are well worth a look if bluegrass is your thing. Powerlines has received some airplay on Triple R of late and the sweet harmonies and quality songs will be a treat for the locals.

The Royal Meredith Hotel is hosting the legendary Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows on the afternoon of Sunday the 24th of Jan. I saw the band play recently in Geelong and Camilleri will leave you gobsmacked as he alternates between saxophone and guitar. The band still rip out classic songs from their extensive catalogue and ‘Shape I’m In’ still gets belted out by the Black Sorrows. Entry is $40 to see a true legend of the Australian music scene.

If you have an obsession with dumplings, like yours truly, Fu Man Lou dish up sumptuous varieties in the heart of Ballarat at 11 Camp Street. They open from 11.30 – late Tuesday to Sunday. The vibe is happy and relaxed. The wine list rocks and by the glass choices are in abundance. Try the chilli oil with your dumplings, wash it down with an Asahi and go and tell all your friends about this great little place. 10% discount on take-away also if you are having a night in.
