Polaris: The Guilt & The Grief

Hardcore really is one of those genres that I feel is really, really hard to stand out in. Realistically, hardcore bands need to work a lot harder to make themselves appealing to more than just your average hardcore fan, and more often than not I’ve found that one band tends to blur into another.

Polaris have produced an EP that has not only sparked my interest, but also stands out for all the right reasons. In addition to the usual hardcore staples – harsh vocals, breakdowns and thunderous drums – Polaris have taken the liberty of lacing their songs with metalcore influences and, in some cases, a decidedly electronic tinge (as seen in the EP’s opening track, ‘Regress’).

Polaris have proven that they’re not a one-trick pony, and if the tasty melodies of ‘Voiceless’ are anything to go by, they’ve got plenty of potential. Polaris are able to simultaneously carry you away with their melodies and punch you in the face with the sheer aggression of their rhythm section, and the inclusion of the aforementioned influences only enhances that effect. While The Guilt & The Grief may not be for everyone, it’s a damn good effort from a damn good band.
