Daughter: Not to Disappear

Hands down, this release is for the feels. I’ve always been a lover of Daughter ever since I heard the track ‘Human’ and this album is one full of tracks that live up to (or as close as possible otherwise) to the hype and feeling that surrounded that single.

Not to Disappear is anthemic, emotive and layers instruments to the point where they seemingly collide and fade into nothing. It’s best to be played loud, in a house alone with no distractions, just the music keeping you company. ‘Doing the Right Thing’ is one worth paying particular attention to. The lyrics are beautiful, and tell a worthwhile story unlike so many songs coming out nowadays.

‘Alone/With You’ is just as lyrically strong and well put together as ‘Doing the Right Thing’, though with its Imogen Heap vibe, it stands as my favourite on the release. Speaking slowly, accentuating words and lines (like “I hate sleeping with you” and “Talking to myself is boring conversation”) it’s impacting and stands as a memorable piece even though its quite minimalist. Overall, this is an album for the thinkers and the listeners, and those who want some substance travelling through their brain.
