Courtney Love totally tore Festival Hall a new one last month. I have to admit, I was expecting some drunkenness or, at the very least, a tantrum of some sort to take place on stage. What we got was a solid, professional, fun two-hour set, complete with an extended encore! Brava!
In pants-pissingly good news, (yes, people are THAT excited) San Francisco skate punk royalty NOFX are finally heading back our way for the first time in four years! Tuesday, November 18 sees the band annihilate Forte territory with a huge show at the Barwon Heads Hotel. Miss this and miss the hell OUT!
Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has recorded a new song, ‘No Pleasing a Woman’, with superstar DJ Avicii for the next Avicii album. Jon Bon Jovi (Bon Jovi), Serj Tankian (System of a Down) and Chris Martin (Coldplay) are amongst the other “rockers” contributing to the album. I use the term loosely, of course.
In terribly sad news, original Ramones drummer Tommy Ramone, the last living original member of the Ramones, lost his battle with cancer on the 11th of July. He was just 65. Soundwave rumours are flying thick and fast throughout the interwebs. Amongst the rumoured bands are Faith No More, Rise Against, Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, Slipknot, […]
Yeah, baby – another local focus this issue, coz… shut up. From all reports, the Tasmanian Up The Punx! Festival held at the Brisbane Hotel in Hobart on June 21st was a huge success, so bring on the Melbourne show. Saturday, October 4, The Tote, Collingwood – mark it in your diaries NOW.
So this issue we’re gonna shake things up a bit and focus on Australian bands for a change. The internationals ain’t goin’ anywhere, and I’ll give ‘em a burl next time! Geelong three-piece rock/pop/grunge/punk combo SPIDEY have dropped their new full-lengther Disappointingly Weird, and it’s a corker. The lo-fi recording works in the record’s favour, as a crisp, clean recording would diminish the warm tone that permeates the album. Another thing I dig about this record, is that it wasn’t what I expected.
Pennywise will issue a collection of older songs written by their original bass player and chief songwriter, Jason Thirsk. Titled Yesterdays, it will feature lead single ‘Violence Never Ends’. Should be a very interesting listen. Melbourne punk rockers Strawberry Fist Cake and Canadians Rehab for Quitters venture into Forteville for a MASSIVE show at the Music Man Megastore on Friday, June 13 to promote their brand new albums. How massive, you ask? Well, they’ll be joined by No Idea, Australian Kingswood Factory, the Revengers and Rabid Zulu! Yowsa! The bands then play IdiotFest at the Brunswick Hotel the very next day, alongside the likes of Foxtrot, Muscle Mary, Admiral Ackbar’s Dishonourable Discharge, Kmart Warriors, The Murderballs and Shadow League!
Hits & Pits round 3 is now but a memory – but what a memory! Face To Face killed it, Unwritten Law nailed it, and Ten Foot Pole were rock solid. The Casualties, unfortunately, suffered from a poor mix and played pretty sloppily; but hey, it’s The Casualties, and it’s always a good time! Believe it or not, round FOUR is already in the works and will take place in November.
The Fest (a rad punk/indie/alternative rock festival held in Gainesville, Florida, that goes for three days each Halloween) has announced its 2014 line-up, and it’s a doozy! The Descendents will headline, alongside Hot Water Music (who will be celebrating their 20-year anniversary as a band!), New Jersey melodic punk heroes Lifetime, Over It, Masked Intruder (who have a new album on the way!), Less Than Jake, Kepi Ghoulie (of the Groovie Ghoulies), The Menzingers, Mixtapes, Cheap Girls, Canadians The Flatliners and Chixdiggit.
